occur in these locations. In an anatomical study of the craniocervical venous system, San Millán Ruíz, et al., 14 found that a mastoid emissary vein was present in 63% of specimens. The vein typically arises from the middle portion of the sigmoid sinus and joins a posterior auricular vein, an occipital vein, or the deep cervical vein. 14 This technique also obviates the need for direct puncture into the sinus, which carries the risk of hemorrhage due to tearing of the sinus wall.
