patient's fourth or fifth decade of life, more often in men than women. This clinical picture, however, can be confused with lumbar stenosis. 8 Hemorrhage that results from Type I spinal AVMs is uncommon, although subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has been reported. 15 Spinal subdural hematomas are rare, 11 and subdural hemorrhage from spinal AVMs is exceedingly rare. 6, 16 To our knowledge, this is the first report of a patient with a Type I spinal AVM who became symptomatic with a spinal subdural hemorrhage. Recurrent subdural hematoma caused by cerebrospinal fluid leakage

Case report

Junichi Mizuno, Praveen V. Mummaneni, Gerald E. Rodts, and Daniel L. Barrow

N ontraumatic SDH is often found in the elderly population. Risk factors for developing spontaneous SDH include hypertension, vascular abnormality, neoplasm, infection, alcoholism, or coagulopathy. Subdural hematomas may also form after CSF overdrainage following a shunt placement procedure, lumbar puncture, external ventricular drainage, and administration of epidural anesthesia. 4 , 5 , 7 , 10 We report a rare case of recurrent SDH caused by a spontaneous CSF fistula located at L-1 to L-2.
