Manuscript Limits Policy

Every word that is unnecessary only pours over the side of a brimming mind. — Cicero

Believing that economy of writing encourages clarity, the Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG) has established new guidelines for the lengths of manuscripts and the number of supporting elements (tables, figures, videos, and references).

Limits vary based on manuscript type. The Manuscript Limits table below outlines the maximums allowed. Note that these limits are not targets to be reached; shorter and more concise submissions are encouraged.

Requirements for Authors

In addition to adhering to the limits outlined in the Manuscript Limits table, authors must now list counts for the following items on the title page of the manuscript:

  • Abstract word count
  • Text word count
  • Number of references
  • Number of tables and/or figures (total)
  • Number of videos

When submitting revisions, authors must update the counts on the title page of the manuscript. See the manuscript template Word file, available for download from the Author Instructions page of the submission site. Peer review staff will verify that the limits are not exceeded.

A Benefit to All

JNSPG believes that the text and element limits will produce papers with more precise language that more clearly conveys your point to your audience. In the words of William Zinsser, "writing improves in direct ratio to the things we can keep out of it that shouldn't be there."

* Total number of words. Text = words from the Introduction through the Conclusions of the manuscript; the Abstract, Acknowledgements, References, and end matter are not included in the text total.
† Values are totals (tables + figures). JNSPG does not accept tables divided into parts (e.g., Table 1A, Table 1B, etc.); each part will be considered a separate table, and the manuscript will be returned to the author for renumbering.
‡ Applies to all article types except case reports, technical notes, and letters to the editor; use print journal limits for those.
